James was born to Willie White, Sr. and Ethel (Singleton) White in Charleston, South Carolina and attended the local schools until he joined the United States Army in 1953.

James was faithfully married to Mary (Richardson) White until God called him home.

James was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

God's infallible word says whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish and he was called to eternity on Friday, April 3, 2026. All that love and know him must remember that earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. James was preceded in death by his parents, Willie White, Sr. and Ethel White; his sons, Anthony Hunter and Bruce Hunter; and siblings, Sinclair White, Samuel White, Willie White and Herbet White.

James leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Mary C. White; children, Sherry Washington (Julius), Gloria White Cohen, James White (Caren), and Martha Truesdale (Richmond). His legacy of love includes a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives.
